Staying active over Christmas

Nov 26, 2025

Christmas really is such a special time, isn’t it? Long, lazy catch-ups with family and friends, shared meals that seem to go on forever, and a chance to step out of your usual routine. But that break in routine can sometimes throw your mental and physical wellbeing off balance—so it’s worth having a simple plan to keep yourself feeling good.

Your usual exercise habits might not fit easily into the Christmas period. Group classes might be on break, your golfing buddies could be away, or maybe you’ve got visitors (or you’re the one travelling!). Whatever the reason, it helps to think ahead about what will work for you—and what you personally need to stay well.

A great place to start? Commit to doing something active every day. It doesn’t need to be big or formal—just something that gets your heart rate up and the oxygen flowing. A little movement goes a long way to clearing the mind and lifting the spirits.

The easiest option is simply going for a walk. Truly—even 10 minutes can make a difference. A short, brisk walk is better than a long, slow one. Try a few easy intervals: 30 seconds at a faster pace followed by 90 seconds at a comfortable recovery pace. Repeat 4–8 times and you’re done! Just keep an eye on the heat—head out earlier or later when it’s cooler.

Or maybe this is the perfect time to dust off the bike. With e-bikes now so accessible, cycling is back on the cards for many of us. It’s low impact, great for the joints, and a lovely way to get outdoors with friends or family.

If you’ve got kids or grandkids around, take them outside to kick a ball—or make it even easier and blow up a balloon and bat it around. It’s surprisingly good exercise, lots of fun, and something anyone can join in on. You can even do it from a chair if that’s what your body needs.

Of course, while any movement is good movement, there’s real value in adding in some structured exercise as well. You’ll get the full balance of stretching, strengthening, and stability work—things that often go missing during the holidays. And Christmas is actually a lovely time to explore new options.

If you’re keen to try something guided, you could do an online class or pop on a DVD or even a USB. Our SuperCue Seniors programmes are really fun, safe and effective. They are fully choreographed, with seated, standing, and active options—so they’re ideal for the whole family. Get your kids or grandkids to join in; we’re pretty confident they’ll enjoy it, and it’s such a fun way to spend time together. You’ll find us at www.supercue.nz.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure you look after you. Put yourself on the priority list—not just over Christmas, but right through 2026. You absolutely deserve the time and care.

Warm wishes,
Marya Hopman – Director, SuperCue Seniors
